Herodes Antipas había arrestado a Juan el Bautista porque este reprendió públicamente su matrimonio con la que había sido esposa de su hermano. Lo mantuvo en la fortaleza-prisión hasta que, en un banquete de cumpleaños, una promesa precipitada lo dejó sin salida.
