“Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your offspring. ” So Abram built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.”
Abram has obeyed God's call to leave Haran and has traveled through Canaan, reaching Shechem, where a large tree marked a place of worship. The land is already inhabited by Canaanites.
