Did Jesus really exist?

Yes. The great majority of historians, Christian or not, agree that Jesus of Nazareth was a real person who was crucified under Pontius Pilate. Is Jesus God?

Historic Christianity answers yes: Jesus is the eternal Son of God who became human, fully God and fully man, one with the Father yet distinct from him. Why did Jesus become human?

Christians believe God did not want to help us from a distance, so the Son of God entered our world as a real person. He came to show us what God is like, to stand with us in everything human, and to rescue us from sin and death from the inside.

What does it mean that Jesus is the Son of God?

Christians call Jesus the Son of God because they believe he shares God's own nature and knows the Father as no one else does. It does not mean God had a wife or that Jesus was created; it is a way of describing a unique, eternal relationship of love. It also means that in Jesus we see what God is really like.

How is Jesus different from other religious teachers?

Many religious teachers have pointed people toward wisdom, goodness or God, and Christians can honor what is true and good in them. What sets Jesus apart, in Christian belief, is that he did not only point the way but said he was the way: he forgave sins in his own name, offered grace as a gift rather than a reward, and, Christians believe, rose from the dead. Those claims are why people have never managed to file him away as one more wise man.

What did Jesus look like?

No one knows for certain, because the New Testament never describes his face or build. Historians and archaeologists suggest he looked like a typical first-century Jewish man from Galilee, with olive-brown skin, dark hair and dark eyes, not like the fair-skinned figure in many paintings.

Who were the 12 disciples of Jesus?

The twelve disciples were the inner circle Jesus chose to live beside him, learn from him and later carry his message. They were ordinary working people, among them fishermen, a tax collector and a man nicknamed the Zealot, and the Gospels are honest about their doubts and failures.

What were the miracles of Jesus?

The Gospels record Jesus healing the sick, driving out evil spirits, calming a storm, feeding crowds and raising the dead. Christians have historically read these as real events and as signs: pointers to who he is and to what God's kingdom looks like. They were never tricks for a crowd, but glimpses of a world made whole.

Christians have always believed that Mary conceived Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit, without a human father. Two Gospels, Matthew and Luke, tell the story independently, and the early creeds confess it. It cannot be proven by history, but Christians see in it that Jesus is both fully God and fully human.

Why was Jesus tempted in the wilderness?

Right after his baptism, Jesus spent forty days fasting in the desert, where the devil tested him with three offers that would have bent his mission. What are the parables of Jesus?

Parables are short stories Jesus drew from everyday life, like a lost sheep, a mustard seed or a son who squanders his inheritance, to show what God is like and how his kingdom works. The best known include the Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son and the Sower.

What did Jesus say about prayer?

Jesus taught that prayer is talking with God as a loving Father, Abba in his own Aramaic, who already knows what you need. Jesus spoke of heaven as the place where God is fully present, and he promised life with God to those who trust him. He said very little about its details, and a great deal about the God who welcomes people there.

Did Jesus rise from the dead?

Christians believe that on the third day after his crucifixion, God raised Jesus to life in a real, transformed body, and that everything else in the faith rests on it. It cannot be proven like a lab result, but the evidence deserves a fair hearing: an empty tomb, testimony written down within a generation, and frightened followers who quickly became bold. Each person has to weigh it honestly and decide.

Is Jesus coming back?

Yes. From the first generation, Christians have believed Jesus will return to set the world right and finish what he began, and the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds both say so. Because no one knows the day, he asked his followers to live ready and hopeful, not anxious; Christians differ on the details, not on the hope.

Why is Jesus called the Lamb of God?

John the Baptist gave Jesus the title when he pointed him out at the Jordan River, calling him the lamb God himself provides to take away the world's sin. What is the gospel?

The word gospel means good news. For Christians it is the announcement that God came near in Jesus, who died for our wrongs, rose from the dead and now offers forgiveness and new life to anyone who trusts him. It is news about what God has done, not a list of rules to earn his love.

Can Jesus forgive anything?

Yes. Christians believe no wrong is too great for Jesus to forgive when a person turns to God and trusts him, because his death on the cross covers even the worst. The Gospels show him forgiving a paralyzed man, a woman the town called a sinner, a wealthy tax collector, a dying criminal and the friend who denied him; forgiveness may not erase every consequence, but it restores you to God.
