Study note

At noon beside Jacob's well in Samaria, Jesus asks a Samaritan woman for a drink, breaking social barriers between Jews and Samaritans and between men and women. When she questions him, he speaks of living water, a phrase that could mean fresh running water but that the prophets used for God's own life-giving presence.
