“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.””
After Peter confesses that Jesus is the Messiah, Jesus responds by blessing him and speaking of building his church. This verse continues that response, using the image of keys, which in Jewish usage symbolized authority in a household or city.
