“Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets before you.”
This is the last of the Beatitudes, spoken to disciples who will face insult and opposition because of their loyalty to Jesus. Matthew's community, and Jesus' first listeners, knew that faithful prophets in Israel had often been rejected and mistreated.
