Zephaniah is a short prophetic book that moves from one of the Bible's sternest warnings to one of its tenderest promises. The prophet announces the day of the Lord, a time of judgment when God will deal with idolatry, corrupt leaders and complacent people in Judah who assume he will do nothing. The warning then widens to the surrounding nations, from Philistia to Nineveh, showing that no power escapes his justice. Yet in the middle comes an invitation: the humble who seek the Lord may be sheltered. The book closes with Jerusalem's failures laid bare and then, unexpectedly, with a promise of purified lips, a gathered remnant and a God who rejoices over his people with singing. Readers have long seen in it both the seriousness of sin and the surprising joy of God. Christians read the day of the Lord in different ways, some mainly as events in Zephaniah's own era and some also as pointing toward a final judgment.
