Who Is a God Like You
“Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity and passes over the transgression of the remnant of His inheritance— who does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in loving devotion? He will again have compassion on us; He will vanquish our iniquities. You will cast out all our sins into the depths of the sea.”
Micah closes his book with wonder: who is a God like you, who forgives sin and delights in showing mercy? He describes God treading our wrongs underfoot and casting them into the depths of the sea. That picture is one of complete disposal, not a filing cabinet of grudges. God does not stay angry forever, because he loves to show steadfast love. If you carry old mistakes, this passage says they are not a permanent stain in his eyes when you turn to him. Today, take a few minutes to thank God for forgiveness by name: say what you are grateful he has forgiven. Then ask yourself who you may need to forgive in return. Practice mercy in a small way today, perhaps by letting go of a minor irritation or answering a harsh word with a kind one.
Prayer
Merciful God, thank You for forgiving me. Help me show the same mercy to others. Amen.
