Not My Will, but Yours

“Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed Him. When He came to the place, He told them, “Pray that you will not enter into temptation.” And He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, where He knelt down and prayed, “Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me. Yet not My will, but Yours be done.” Then an angel from heaven appeared to Him and strengthened Him. And in His anguish, He prayed more earnestly, and His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. When Jesus rose from prayer and returned to the disciples, He found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. “Why are you sleeping?” He asked. “Get up and pray so that you will not enter into temptation.””

In Gethsemane, Jesus does not pretend to be calm. Luke describes him praying in such anguish that his sweat fell like drops of blood, and he asks the Father whether the cup can pass. Then he adds the sentence that changes everything: not my will but yours be done. Bringing our real feelings to God is not a lack of faith; Jesus modeled it. And surrendering does not mean feeling nothing. It means telling the truth about the fear and still choosing to trust. An angel came to strengthen him, and help often arrives in the middle of the struggle, not before it. Today, if you are facing something you dread, pray the honest version first, then place it in God's hands in your own words. If the weight feels too heavy, also tell a pastor or a friend so you do not carry it alone.

Prayer

Father, I bring You my fear honestly. Help me trust You and say yes to Your will. Amen.
