Look at the Birds

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air: They do not sow or reap or gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?”

Jesus says do not be anxious about life, food, or clothing, and then he points out the window. Look at the birds. They do not plant or store, yet the heavenly Father feeds them. You are worth much more. He asks a gentle question in Matthew 6:27: can worry add a single hour to your life? He is not mocking real concerns; he is inviting us to notice the ordinary evidence of care that surrounds us. Anxiety shrinks our view to the next disaster, while looking up widens it. That does not mean we stop working or planning, since the birds still search for seeds. It means we do it without dread. If anxiety feels constant or overwhelming, please talk to a doctor, counselor, or pastor; that is wisdom, not weakness. Today, spend three minutes watching birds, trees, or sky and thank God for one specific provision.
