Love That Shows Up
“Love must be sincere. Detest what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Outdo yourselves in honoring one another. Do not let your zeal subside; keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, persistent in prayer. Share with the saints who are in need. Practice hospitality.”
Paul gives a rapid list of what real love looks like: hate what is evil, hold on to what is good, be devoted to one another, outdo each other in showing honor, and be joyful in hope, patient in trouble, faithful in prayer. It reads like a practical checklist rather than a feeling. Love, in this passage, is a set of habits. Read Romans 12:13, which asks us to share with those in need and practice hospitality. Hospitality is concrete: it means opening a door, setting an extra place, giving up a comfortable evening. The phrase about honoring others first is a helpful challenge to social media culture, where we often hunt for attention. Today, choose one of these verbs and act on it. You might invite someone over for dinner this week, bring food to a person who is ill, or send a note that honors someone.
