Anna, Faithful in the Temple

“There was also a prophetess named Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher, who was well along in years. She had been married for seven years, and then was a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. Coming forward at that moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the Child to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.”

Luke gives only three verses to Anna, a widow of great age who never left the temple but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer. When Jesus is presented, she arrives at that very moment, gives thanks to God and speaks about the child to everyone waiting for redemption. She reminds us that a life may look small from the outside and yet be exactly where God's story intersects. Anna had likely known grief and long loneliness, yet she did not turn bitter; she turned to prayer. Her faithfulness put her in the right place at the right time. Today, consider a small and steady practice you could keep: five minutes of prayer each morning, a weekly visit, or a daily note of encouragement. Choose one, and begin it before the year ends. Consistency, not grand gestures, is often how God prepares us to recognize Him.

Prayer

God, make me steady in prayer and faithful in small things, ready to recognize You. Amen.
