Wisdom That Makes Peace
“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good conduct, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast in it or deny the truth. Such wisdom does not come from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap the fruit of righteousness.”
James contrasts two kinds of wisdom. One is marked by bitter envy and selfish ambition, and it leaves disorder in its wake. The other comes from above and is described with gentle words: pure, peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Wisdom, in this view, is not cleverness or winning arguments; it is a way of behaving that makes life better for those around us. The last verse says peacemakers sow in peace and reap a harvest of righteousness. Peace is planted, not simply wished for. Today, look for one place where tension is growing, at work, online or at home. Ask God for the wisdom he describes, then do one small act of peacemaking: soften your tone, listen before answering, or apologize first. Trust that a seed planted quietly can grow.
Prayer
Lord, give me the wisdom from above, and make me a sower of peace today. Amen.
