Where You Go, I Will Go
“But Ruth replied: “Do not urge me to leave you or to turn from following you. For wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you live, I will live; your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD punish me, and ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.””
Ruth had every reason to go home. Her husband had died, her mother-in-law Naomi was bitter and urging her to leave, and the road to Bethlehem led toward an uncertain future as a foreign widow. Yet Ruth chose loyalty. Her words to Naomi are a vow of presence: your people will be my people, and your God my God. What makes this remarkable is that nothing forced her. It was covenant love, what the Old Testament calls hesed, faithfulness that stays when leaving would be easier. God later wove Ruth into the family line of David and of Jesus. Small faithful choices are often the threads He uses. Today, think of someone who is walking a hard season, perhaps a friend or relative who has grown quiet. Reach out with a call or a visit, and offer not advice but simple presence.
Prayer
God of faithful love, make me a person who stays. Show me who needs my presence today. Amen.
