When I Do Not Know How to Pray

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know how we ought to pray, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words. And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”

Paul admits something many believers hide: sometimes we do not know what to pray for. The astonishing answer is that the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words. You do not have to pray perfectly. In moments of grief, confusion or exhaustion, when words fail, a sigh, a tear or a single name can be enough, because the Spirit carries what we cannot articulate. This frees us from the pressure of eloquence. Prayer is less about saying the right things than about staying connected. Today, if you feel too weary or troubled to pray, try simply sitting in silence for two minutes, holding before God the person or situation on your heart. Trust that you are heard. If pain feels overwhelming, also reach out to a pastor, counselor or trusted friend.

Prayer

Spirit of God, pray in me when I have no words. Thank you for hearing my sighs.
