Fasting in Secret

“When you fast, do not be somber like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that your fasting will not be obvious to men, but only to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
Matthew 6:16-18 (BSB)Read the whole chapter →

Jesus does not say if you fast, but when you fast, assuming that his followers will practice this ancient discipline. What he addresses is the motive. Some make a show of hunger, wanting others to admire their devotion, and their admiration is all the reward they get. Instead, Jesus says, wash your face and anoint your head so that no one knows, and the Father who sees in secret will reward you. The point is not secrecy for its own sake but that God's attention is enough. A hidden discipline trains us to live for an audience of one. Fasting is not right for everyone; those with health conditions, or a history of struggling with food, should choose another form of sacrifice and consult a doctor. Today, choose one quiet act of self-denial, perhaps setting aside social media for a few hours, and offer it silently to God.

Prayer

Father who sees in secret, teach me to seek Your face and not others' praise. Amen.
