I Know My Redeemer Lives
“I wish that my words were recorded and inscribed in a book, by an iron stylus on lead, or chiseled in stone forever. But I know that my Redeemer lives, and in the end He will stand upon the earth. Even after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God. I will see Him for myself; my eyes will behold Him, and not as a stranger. How my heart yearns within me!”
Job has lost his children, his wealth and his health, and his friends have only made things worse with their accusations. In this passage he wishes his words could be carved in rock forever, so that his case would not be forgotten. Then, out of the pit of suffering, comes an extraordinary declaration: I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth. Even after his skin is destroyed, he expects to see God with his own eyes. Job does not yet have answers, but he clings to a hope beyond his circumstances. Christians hear in this a glimpse of the resurrection hope. Faith does not always look like calm certainty; sometimes it looks like Job, weary and aching, still reaching toward God. If you are hurting today, you do not need a tidy explanation. You may simply say, I still trust that You are alive. If grief overwhelms you, please reach out to someone who can sit with you.
Prayer
My Redeemer lives. When I cannot understand, help me hold on to You. Amen.
