The Fast God Chooses

“Isn’t this the fast that I have chosen: to break the chains of wickedness, to untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and tear off every yoke? Isn’t it to share your bread with the hungry, to bring the poor and homeless into your home, to clothe the naked when you see him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will come quickly. Your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry out, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’ If you remove the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger and malicious talk,”

The people in Isaiah's day fasted carefully yet wondered why God seemed silent. The prophet answers that their religion had not touched their treatment of others. The fast God desires is one that loosens unjust chains, shares bread with the hungry, shelters the homeless and refuses to turn away from one's own family. Then the promise: light breaks like the dawn, healing comes quickly, and when you call, the Lord says, here I am. Notice that giving up food is not condemned; it simply cannot substitute for mercy. Worship and justice belong together. Whatever you may be doing this season to grow spiritually, ask whether it is making you more generous. Today, pick one concrete act: buy groceries for a neighbor in need, give to a reliable local shelter, or forgive a debt someone owes you. Let your devotion take a body.

Prayer

God of justice and mercy, make my devotion generous. Show me who needs my help today. Amen.
