Winter Is Past

“My beloved calls to me, “Arise, my darling. Come away with me, my beautiful one. For now the winter is past; the rain is over and gone. The flowers have appeared in the countryside; the season of singing has come, and the cooing of turtledoves is heard in our land.”

Few books of the Bible celebrate love as openly as the Song of Solomon. Here the beloved calls out an invitation: come away, for winter is over, the rains are gone, flowers appear on the earth and the song of birds returns. It is a springtime poem about love awakening. Christians have read the Song both as a celebration of married love, which Scripture treats as a good gift, and as an echo of God's devotion to his people. Either way, it reminds us that faith is not opposed to delight. God made beauty, affection and joy. Today, notice one good thing in the season around you, whether blossoms, warmth, or light in the evening, and thank the Giver. If you are married, do a small loving thing for your spouse. If you are not, cherish a friend, and let it be a sign of God's warmth.

Prayer

Lord, thank you for beauty and love. Awaken my heart to notice your goodness in every season.
