Fruit, Not Effort

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us walk in step with the Spirit.”
Galatians 5:22-25 (BSB)Read the whole chapter →

Paul lists what the Spirit grows in a person: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Notice the singular word fruit, as though these qualities belong together as one harvest. Also notice that fruit is grown, not manufactured. A tree does not strain; it stays rooted and receives what it needs. This does not remove our responsibility, since Paul goes on to say we should keep in step with the Spirit. It shifts the focus from grim self-improvement to cooperation with God's work. Which quality do you most lack today? Rather than trying to force it, ask the Spirit for it and then arrange your day to make room: rest for peace, a slower pace for patience, a small kindness for goodness. Growth is slow, but the Gardener is faithful.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, grow your fruit in me. Give me room in my day to receive it.
