Run With Endurance
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off every encumbrance and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with endurance the race set out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
The writer pictures a stadium filled with people from earlier chapters, faithful men and women who finished their race. Their example surrounds us like spectators cheering us on. The advice that follows is practical: throw off whatever slows you down, especially sin that clings so closely, and run with endurance the race marked out for you. The secret is where the eyes go. We look to Jesus, the one who began our faith and will bring it to completion, who endured the cross and now sits at God's right hand. Notice the phrase race marked out for you. It is not someone else's course. Today, ask what weight you need to lay down, a habit, a grudge or a distraction. Then fix your attention on Jesus for a few minutes before you run into the day.
Prayer
Jesus, author and finisher of my faith, keep my eyes on you. Help me lay down what slows me.
