Let Peace Be the Referee
“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, for to this you were called as members of one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”
Paul gives the Colossians three short instructions that fit together. First, let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, like an umpire settling the arguments inside us. Second, let the message of Christ live richly among you through teaching, singing and thankfulness. Third, whatever you do, in word or action, do it in Jesus' name, giving thanks to the Father. Notice how often gratitude appears. It is not an extra; it is woven into how we listen, speak and work. This is a wonderful passage for the week before a season of gatherings, when family tensions and busy schedules can crowd out peace. Today, before an important conversation or task, pause and pray a single line asking Christ's peace to guide it. Then, at day's end, list three things you did or received that you can thank the Father for.
Prayer
Christ, let Your peace decide the arguments in my heart today. Fill my words and work with thanks. Amen.
