The Secret of Enough

“Now I rejoice greatly in the Lord that at last you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. I am not saying this out of need, for I have learned to be content regardless of my circumstances. I know how to live humbly, and I know how to abound. In any and every situation I have learned the secret of being filled and being hungry, of having plenty and having need. I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”
Philippians 4:10-13 (BSB)Read the whole chapter →

Paul writes from prison, thanking friends for their support, and then he says something surprising: he has learned to be content whether he has plenty or very little. The word learned matters. Contentment was not a personality trait he was born with; it grew through seasons of hunger and seasons of abundance. He credits the strength that comes from Christ, not his own discipline. Many of us chase the moment when we will finally feel we have enough, and it keeps moving. Paul suggests that enough is found in a Person, not in a number. Today, notice one moment when you feel the pull of wanting more, a purchase, a comparison, a scroll through someone else's life. Pause, breathe, and name one thing you already have that you once prayed for. Let that be your answer to the pull.

Prayer

Lord, teach me to be content in every circumstance, and remind me that You are enough. Amen.
