Not Meeting Alone

“Let us hold resolutely to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds. Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
Hebrews 10:23-25 (BSB)Read the whole chapter →

The writer of Hebrews is speaking to weary believers tempted to drift away. His remedy is not a stronger willpower but a stronger community. First he points to God's faithfulness: the one who promised can be trusted, so hold fast to hope. Then he turns to us: consider how to stir one another up to love and good works, and do not give up meeting together, as some have the habit of doing. Hebrews 10:24 uses a striking verb, consider, meaning to think carefully about it. Encouragement does not happen by accident; it is planned, like a meal. Faith was never meant to be a private hobby. Whether your gathering is a large church, a small group or two friends, it matters. Today, contact one person from your community you have not seen for a while. Suggest a concrete time to meet, and come with the aim of building them up rather than being built up.
