Sowing for the Long Harvest

“Do not be deceived: God is not to be mocked. Whatever a man sows, he will reap in return. The one who sows to please his flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; but the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to the family of faith.”

Farmers know that what you plant determines what you pick, and that seeds do not sprout overnight. Paul applies this to daily choices. Whatever we sow, whether to selfishness or to the Spirit, we will eventually reap. That is both warning and encouragement. The encouragement is in Galatians 6:9: do not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap if we do not give up. Anyone who has kept up a kindness that seemed to go unnoticed will feel the truth of that. The harvest may come slowly, and often in ways we did not predict. Then Paul adds a practical clause: as we have opportunity, do good to everyone, especially to the family of faith. Today, sow one small, hidden seed. Pay for someone's coffee, encourage a coworker, pray for a neighbor by name. Do it quietly and leave the harvest to God.
