Salt and Light
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its savor, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Jesus does not tell his followers to try to become salt and light; he says they already are. Salt preserves and adds flavor, and a lamp is made to be seen, not hidden under a basket. Both work quietly and both have to be in contact with something to matter: salt must touch the food, and light must enter the dark room. Matthew 5:16 connects the two: let your light shine so that others may see your good works and give glory to your Father. The aim is not to draw attention to ourselves but to point beyond us. Ordinary faithfulness at work, at home and online is more persuasive than loud argument. Today, think about the place where you spend most of your time. Ask yourself what would make it a little brighter or a little better preserved because you are there, and do one thing to make that true before the day ends.

Prayer
Jesus, make me salt and light where I am. Let my ordinary faithfulness point others to you.
