Where Does My Help Come From?

“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to slip; your Protector will not slumber. Behold, the Protector of Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is the shade on your right hand. The sun will not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will guard you from all evil; He will preserve your soul. The LORD will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore.”

This is a traveler's psalm, sung by pilgrims climbing toward Jerusalem through hills that could hide danger. The question in Psalms 121:1 is honest: where will help come from? The answer is not the hills themselves, which were often places of fear or false worship, but the Maker of heaven and earth. Then the psalm repeats one word again and again: keep. The Lord keeps your foot from slipping, keeps you by day and by night, keeps your going out and your coming in. Notice that he neither slumbers nor sleeps. That is good news for anyone lying awake at three in the morning, because someone is on watch who does not need rest. Today, as you leave and return home, say the psalm's promise quietly to yourself. Then hand one worry over to the one who is awake, and try to rest.
