Bible Verses About The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is God himself, present and active: hovering over creation, filling Jesus' followers at Pentecost, and living in believers today. Scripture shows him comforting, teaching, praying with us when words fail, and producing the character of Christ in ordinary lives. Christians agree on who he is, while differing on how some of his gifts work today. These passages introduce his person, his work, and the life he makes possible. Read them as an invitation to know him, not just to know about him.

Who the Spirit is

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.”

From the opening lines, the Spirit of God is present over the waters as creation begins. He is not a late arrival in the story.

“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and will be in you.”

Jesus promises another Helper who will be with his followers forever, the Spirit of truth who lives in them. The word points to a person who comes alongside, not a mere force.

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,”

Jesus sends his disciples to baptize in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. This is one of the clearest pointers in the Gospels to the Trinity.

“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like a mighty rushing wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”

At Pentecost the Spirit arrives with sound like wind and flames resting on the disciples, and they begin speaking in other languages. The church's public life starts here.

What the Spirit does

“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you.”

The Spirit will teach the disciples everything and remind them of what Jesus said. This is how Christians understand the Gospels and the whole Bible coming alive to a reader.

“But I tell you the truth, it is for your benefit that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. And when He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because they do not believe in Me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world has been condemned. I still have much to tell you, but you cannot yet bear to hear it. However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come.”

Jesus says it is good for him to go, because the Spirit will convict the world and guide believers into truth. The Spirit points always toward Christ.

“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery that returns you to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption to sonship, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”

The Spirit leads God's children and assures them they belong to him, enabling them to call God Father. He turns fear into family confidence.

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know how we ought to pray, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words. And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”

When we do not know what to pray, the Spirit speaks for us with groans too deep for words. It is a comfort for anyone whose prayers feel thin.

“And in Him, having heard and believed the word of truth—the gospel of your salvation—you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the pledge of our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession, to the praise of His glory.”

Believers are marked with the Holy Spirit as a seal and a first installment of what is coming. His presence now is a guarantee of the future.

Fruit and gifts

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

Paul lists the fruit the Spirit grows: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. It is character, not performance.

“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh craves what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are opposed to each other, so that you do not do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.”

To walk by the Spirit is to be freed from the pull of selfish desires, a daily habit rather than a single event. The Spirit and the flesh are in tension, and he gives the help to choose well.

“There are different gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different ministries, but the same Lord. There are different ways of working, but the same God works all things in all people. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in various tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, who apportions them to each one as He determines.”

Many kinds of gifts come from the one Spirit, each given for the good of all. Some traditions teach that miraculous gifts continue today and others that they faded, but all agree gifts serve the church.

“Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to reckless indiscretion. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Paul sets being filled with the Spirit against being drunk on wine, and the fullness shows up in singing, thanks and mutual encouragement. Being filled is something to seek again and again.

Power to witness

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.””

Jesus promises his disciples power when the Spirit comes, to be his witnesses from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth. Mission begins with dependence, not self-confidence.

“And afterward, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on My menservants and maidservants, I will pour out My Spirit in those days.”

The prophet foresees God pouring out his Spirit on sons and daughters, old and young, women and men. Peter later says this began at Pentecost.

A short prayer

Holy Spirit, come and fill me. Teach me the truth, grow your fruit in my life, and help me pray when I do not know how. Amen.
