Bible Verses About Patience

Almost everyone is waiting for something: an answer, a change, a person, a door to open. The Bible treats patience not as passive sitting around but as a stubborn kind of trust, one that keeps showing up while God works on a timeline we did not choose. It also asks us to be patient with each other, which is often harder. These passages cover waiting on God, bearing with people, and the quiet growth that happens in long seasons. Take one at a time.

Waiting on God

“Wait patiently for the LORD; be strong and courageous. Wait patiently for the LORD!”

David ends a psalm full of danger by urging himself, and us, to wait for the Lord with a strong heart. Waiting is described as an act of courage, not of defeat.

“I waited patiently for the LORD; He inclined to me and heard my cry. He lifted me up from the pit of despair, out of the miry clay; He set my feet upon a rock, and made my footsteps firm. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.”

The psalmist looks back on a long wait and reports that God finally bent down, listened and set his feet on solid ground. The result of patience becomes a new song others can hear.

“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary; His understanding is beyond searching out. He gives power to the faint and increases the strength of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall. But those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.”

Isaiah describes a God who never tires and who renews the strength of those who wait for him. The promise is stamina for the long road, not an escape from it.

“The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him. It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.”

Written in the ruins of Jerusalem, these lines still call it good to wait quietly for the Lord's rescue. Patience is possible even when everything around you looks lost.

“For the vision awaits an appointed time; it testifies of the end and does not lie. Though it lingers, wait for it, since it will surely come and will not delay.”

God tells the prophet that the vision has an appointed time and will not be late, even when it feels slow. Delay is not the same as absence.

Patience with people

“with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,”

Paul pairs patience with humility and gentleness as the way believers carry one another in love. It is the everyday habit that keeps a community together.

“Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”

Patience appears in a list of qualities God's chosen people put on like clothing, alongside forgiveness modeled on the Lord's own. We are patient with others because we have been treated patiently.

“A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, but he who is slow to anger calms dispute.”

A hot temper stirs up conflict, while a slow-to-anger person calms a quarrel. Proverbs treats patience as a practical skill for peace.

“A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man promotes folly.”

The person who is slow to anger is called wise, and the quick-tempered person is said to show foolishness. The verse invites a pause before reacting.

“And we urge you, brothers, to admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, and be patient with everyone.”

Paul asks the church to be patient with everyone while warning the idle, encouraging the timid and helping the weak. Patience here sits beside honesty and care, not in place of them.

Growing through long seasons

“Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer awaits the precious fruit of the soil—how patient he is for the fall and spring rains. You, too, be patient and strengthen your hearts, because the Lord’s coming is near.”

James points to a farmer who waits through the seasons for the harvest and tells believers to steady their hearts the same way. Some things cannot be hurried, only tended.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you encounter trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Allow perseverance to finish its work, so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

Trials test faith and produce endurance, and endurance is meant to finish its work so the believer grows complete. Patience is presented as something being built in you.

“Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”

Paul traces a chain from suffering to perseverance to character to hope. Hard seasons are not wasted when God is at work in them.

“For in this hope we were saved; but hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he can already see? But if we hope for what we do not yet see, we wait for it patiently.”

Hope by definition is for what we do not yet see, so waiting for it takes patience. Believers wait, Paul says, with eager expectation rather than resignation.

“Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

Paul encourages believers not to grow weary of doing good, because a harvest comes in due time if they do not give up. It is a word for anyone whose good work seems unnoticed.

A short prayer

Lord, I do not like waiting, and you know how tired I am of it. Teach me to trust your timing, and make me gentle with the people around me while I wait. Amen.
