About this book: 1 John

First John is a warm, plainspoken letter written to help believers know that they have eternal life and to keep them close to the truth. The author writes as an eyewitness to Jesus, and he circles back again and again to three tests of genuine Christian life: believing that Jesus is the Son of God who came in the flesh, obeying his commands, and loving one another. God is described as light and as love. Believers are urged to walk in the light, to confess their sins honestly, and to trust that Jesus is their advocate and the sacrifice for sin. The letter warns against those who left the community and denied that Jesus had come as a real human being, and it cautions against loving the world's desires more than the Father. Its repeated address to little children and dear friends gives it a pastoral, family tone. The author never names himself; church tradition has long connected the letter with the apostle John, and some scholars think it came from a close circle around him.

About this chapterJohn writes as an eyewitness of the Word of life, whom the apostles heard, saw and touched, and he proclaims what they saw so that others may share fellowship with them and with the Father and the Son. The message is that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. Walking in darkness while claiming fellowship with God is a lie, but those who walk in the light have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus cleanses them from all sin. Claiming to be without sin is self-deception, yet if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive and to cleanse us.

1That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our own eyes, which we have gazed upon and touched with our own hands—this is the Word of life. 2And this is the life that was revealed; we have seen it and testified to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us. 3We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And this fellowship of ours is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ. 4We write these things so that our joy may be complete. 5And this is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you: God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. 6If we say we have fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10If we say we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar, and His word is not in us.
