The Running Father

“So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still in the distance, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. The son declared, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. ’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let us feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again! He was lost and is found!’ So they began to celebrate.”

The younger son had squandered everything and rehearsed a speech about being a hired servant. But while he was still far off, his father saw him, felt compassion, ran, and embraced him. He interrupted the speech with a robe, a ring and a feast. This is Jesus' portrait of God: not waiting with folded arms for us to grovel, but running to meet us. The son's return was not the beginning of love; love was already waiting. If you have wandered, this story says the way home is open. If you have never left, it invites you to share the father's joy when others return. Today, take one honest step toward God, however small. And if there is someone whose return you have been slow to welcome, ask God to soften your heart and prepare a warm greeting.

Prayer

Father, thank You for running to meet me. Help me welcome others as You welcome me. Amen.
