He Sings Over You
“Sing for joy, O Daughter of Zion; shout aloud, O Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, O Daughter of Jerusalem! The LORD has taken away your punishment; He has turned back your enemy. Israel’s King, the LORD, is among you; no longer will you fear any harm. On that day they will say to Jerusalem: “Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands fall limp. The LORD your God is among you; He is mighty to save. He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you with His love; He will rejoice over you with singing.””
Zephaniah tells God's people to sing and shout, because the Lord has removed their punishment and is in their midst. Then comes a tender picture: he will rejoice over you with gladness, quiet you with his love, and exult over you with loud singing. Imagine God as a parent singing over a child, not to scold but to delight. Many of us imagine God as distant or disappointed; this verse says he takes joy in his people. That does not mean we never need correction, but correction is inside a bigger love. Today, sit in silence for a minute and let that image settle. Then speak one encouraging word to someone who needs it, as a small echo of the way God speaks over you. Let delight, not fear, be the atmosphere of your day.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for delighting in me. Let Your love quiet my heart today. Amen.
