Run With Endurance
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off every encumbrance and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with endurance the race set out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”
The writer pictures a stadium filled with the faithful from earlier generations, cheering us on. We are told to throw off whatever slows us down and the sin that clings so closely, and to run the race set before us. The secret is to fix our eyes on Jesus, who endured the cross, disregarding its shame, for the joy set before him. He is both the example and the one who gives strength. Endurance is not speed; it is steady faithfulness. If you are weary, the writer says to consider him so you will not lose heart. Today, identify one weight that slows you: a distraction, a grudge, an overcommitment. Set it down deliberately. Then take a step of steady faithfulness in the race God has given you, even a small, unnoticed one.
Prayer
Jesus, I fix my eyes on You. Help me lay down what weighs me down and keep running. Amen.
