Strength for the Weary

“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary; His understanding is beyond searching out. He gives power to the faint and increases the strength of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall. But those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.”

Isaiah writes to people who feel forgotten, and he begins with a question: have you not known, have you not heard? The Creator of the ends of the earth does not grow tired or weary, and his understanding has no bottom. Then comes the surprise: he gives strength to the faint. The promise is not for those who look strong, but for those who admit they are worn out. Those who wait for him renew their strength. In Isaiah 40:31 the picture moves from soaring to running to simply walking without fainting. Sometimes the miracle is not flying but continuing. Whatever level of energy you have today, God meets you there. Today, do one thing that honors your limits, such as an earlier bedtime, a real lunch away from your desk, or saying no to one extra demand. Tell God you are trusting him to renew you.
