A Future in Exile

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.”
Jeremiah 29:11-13 (BSB)Read the whole chapter →

This famous promise was not written to people on a mountaintop. It was sent in a letter to exiles in Babylon, far from home and told they would stay for decades. God says he has plans for their welfare and a future with hope. But the plan involves settling in, building houses, and seeking the good of the city where they live. Hope is not a way to skip the hard season; it is a way to live faithfully inside it. Notice that Jeremiah 29:13 promises that those who seek him with all their heart will find him. The promise is for a relationship, not only for circumstances. If you feel displaced by a move, a loss, or an unwelcome change, this is for you. Today, do one small act of planting where you are, such as greeting a neighbor, tidying a corner, or praying for your city.

Lord, teach me to hope while I wait. Help me plant good things where I am and to seek you with all my heart.
