Renewed Inside

“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, yet our inner self is being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory that is far beyond comparison. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

Paul knew what it was to be worn down: shipwrecks, hardship, and a body that was often in pain. Yet he writes that we do not lose heart. Outwardly we are wasting away, but inwardly we are being renewed day by day. His secret is perspective. He calls present troubles light and momentary, which is startling from someone who suffered so much, and he sets them beside an eternal weight of glory that outweighs them. Read 2 Corinthians 4:18 and notice the choice to fix our eyes on what is unseen. That does not mean ignoring pain. It means refusing to let the visible be the only measure of reality. Aging, illness, and disappointment are real, but so is the daily renewing. Today, when you feel discouraged, stop and name one thing that God is quietly building in you, and thank him for it.
