A Song for the Lowly

“Then Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior! For He has looked with favor on the humble state of His servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed. For the Mighty One has done great things for me. Holy is His name. His mercy extends to those who fear Him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with His arm; He has scattered those who are proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones, but has exalted the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things, but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped His servant Israel, remembering to be merciful, as He promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his descendants forever.””

Mary answers Elizabeth with a song. It begins with worship: her soul magnifies the Lord because He looked on His lowly servant. Then it widens into a picture of God's character across generations. He shows mercy to those who fear Him, scatters the proud, brings down rulers, lifts up the humble, fills the hungry and sends the self-satisfied away empty. This is not a soft lullaby; it is a bold hymn of reversal. Mary is a teenager from a small town, yet she sings with the confidence of someone who knows the God of the prophets. Notice how her song is woven from Scripture she had already learned. What we store in our hearts becomes the music we sing in crisis and in joy. Today, memorize one passage or write your own short song of thanks, and share it with someone. Let praise be your first response to God's surprises.

Prayer

Lord, my soul praises You. Fill my heart with Your Word so praise comes easily. Amen.
