Grace That Teaches

“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to everyone. It instructs us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live sensible, upright, and godly lives in the present age, as we await the blessed hope and glorious appearance of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ. He gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.”

Paul says the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to everyone, and then he adds something surprising: this same grace teaches us. It trains us to say no to godless living and worldly desires, and to live with self-control, uprightness and devotion in the present age while we wait for the blessed hope, the appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ. Grace is not only a pardon for the past; it is a teacher for the present and a promise for the future. Christmas is the appearing of grace in a person. As gifts pile up this month, ask what grace is teaching you. Perhaps it is patience with a family member, moderation with spending, or generosity toward someone in need. Today, choose one habit that grace is inviting you to release or begin, and take a first step. Do not rely on willpower; ask the Teacher for help.

Prayer

Lord, let Your grace teach me how to live. Give me strength for one honest step today. Amen.
