The Refiner Who Comes Near

““Behold, I will send My messenger, who will prepare the way before Me. Then the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to His temple—the Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight—see, He is coming,” says the LORD of Hosts. But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He will be like a refiner’s fire, like a launderer’s soap. And He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver. Then they will present offerings to the LORD in righteousness. Then the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will please the LORD, as in days of old and years gone by.”

Malachi announces that the Lord will come suddenly to His temple, and then asks a sobering question: who can endure the day of His coming? The answer uses two pictures from ordinary work, a refiner's fire and a launderer's soap. Both are strong, and both aim at cleaning, not destroying. A silversmith keeps the metal in the heat only until he sees his own reflection in it. That is comforting when we feel pressured: God's purpose in refining is to reveal His image in us. Advent invites us to prepare for the coming King, and preparation includes letting Him deal with what is impure, such as bitterness, shortcuts, or private habits. Today, ask God one direct question: what do You want to purify in me? Then listen without defending yourself. Choose one small change you can make before tonight, and trust that the hand holding the fire is patient and kind.

Prayer

Lord, refine me with Your patient hands until Your likeness shows in my life. Amen.
