Small Places, Big Purposes
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come forth for Me One to be ruler over Israel — One whose origins are of old, from the days of eternity. Therefore Israel will be abandoned until she who is in labor has given birth; then the rest of His brothers will return to the children of Israel. He will stand and shepherd His flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majestic name of the LORD His God. And they will dwell securely, for then His greatness will extend to the ends of the earth. And He will be our peace when Assyria invades our land and tramples our citadels. We will raise against it seven shepherds, even eight leaders of men.”
Micah names Bethlehem, a village too small to count among the clans of Judah, as the place from which a ruler of Israel will come. God likes to begin great things in overlooked places. The ruler is described as a shepherd who stands firm, gathers scattered people and brings security, and He is greater than any earthly power because His origins reach back to ancient times. Christians have always read this as pointing to Jesus, born in that very town. If you have ever felt small, unnoticed or stuck in a place that does not seem important, this passage is for you. God does not measure significance by size or applause. Today, look for someone or something easy to overlook: a coworker who is never thanked, a neighbor who is alone, a small task that no one will praise. Give it careful attention, and remember that heaven often works in small places.
Prayer
God of small places, help me see what You see and serve faithfully where I am. Amen.
