The God Who Sings Over You

“Sing for joy, O Daughter of Zion; shout aloud, O Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, O Daughter of Jerusalem! The LORD has taken away your punishment; He has turned back your enemy. Israel’s King, the LORD, is among you; no longer will you fear any harm. On that day they will say to Jerusalem: “Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands fall limp. The LORD your God is among you; He is mighty to save. He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you with His love; He will rejoice over you with singing.””

Zephaniah has spent most of his short book warning of judgment, and then the tone changes. He tells the people to sing and shout, because the Lord has removed their punishment and lives among them. The most tender line pictures God Himself rejoicing over His people with gladness, quieting them with His love and even singing over them. We usually imagine God frowning at our failures, but here He delights. A parent who sings over a restless child is not angry; he is steadying her with presence. If you enter this season feeling behind, tired or unworthy, hear this: you are not merely tolerated, you are treasured. Today, take one minute of stillness and ask God to quiet your worries by His love. Then play a song that lifts your heart toward Him, and let it be your answer to the One who sings over you.

Prayer

Father, quiet my heart with Your love. Let me hear You rejoicing over me. Amen.
