Patient Like a Farmer

“Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer awaits the precious fruit of the soil—how patient he is for the fall and spring rains. You, too, be patient and strengthen your hearts, because the Lord’s coming is near. Do not complain about one another, brothers, so that you will not be judged. Look, the Judge is standing at the door! Brothers, as an example of patience in affliction, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. See how blessed we consider those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen the outcome from the Lord. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.”
James 5:7-11 (BSB)Read the whole chapter →

James points us to the farmer who plants and then waits for the early and late rains. He cannot hurry the harvest, and he does not stop working just because he cannot see the crop. Waiting is part of the work. James adds a gentle warning against grumbling at one another, as if impatience were contagious, and he reminds us of the prophets and of Job, whose endurance ended in seeing the Lord's compassion. Advent is the church's school of patience. We live between promise and fulfillment, and our culture shouts for instant results. Yet the deepest things, faith, character, healing, reconciliation, ripen slowly. Today, identify one situation where you have been demanding quick results, perhaps with a child, a colleague or yourself. Swap one complaint for one prayer, and do one small faithful act toward that situation. Then leave the timing to the One who sends both the rain and the harvest.

Prayer

Lord, teach me to wait like a farmer, faithful in my work and trusting You for the harvest. Amen.
