What Does the Lord Require?

“He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?”
Micah 6:8 (BSB)Read the whole chapter →

Micah stages a courtroom scene in which Israel asks how to please God. Should they bring thousands of rams or rivers of oil? The prophet cuts through the extravagance. God has already shown what is good: to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with Him. Notice that all three are relational. Justice concerns how we treat others, mercy how we feel toward them, and humility how we stand before God. Religion is never merely private ritual, and it is never merely social activism either. The three belong together like legs of a stool. It is easy to excel at one and neglect the others. Today, ask which of the three you most tend to skip. Then choose one practical step: pay a fair wage or a bill on time, forgive a small debt of pride, or admit a mistake you have been defending.

Prayer

God, teach me to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with You. Amen.
