What God Actually Asks

“With what shall I come before the LORD when I bow before the God on high? Should I come to Him with burnt offerings, with year-old calves? Would the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I present my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?”
Micah 6:6-8 (BSB)Read the whole chapter →

The prophet imagines a worshiper anxious to impress God with more and more: bigger sacrifices, greater offerings, even the most precious things he owns. It is easy to recognize ourselves. We often assume that God wants impressive religious effort. Micah answers with startling simplicity. God has already shown what is good, and it comes down to three things: to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. Nothing exotic, nothing that requires a platform. Justice touches how we treat people in ordinary transactions, mercy shapes how we handle others' failures, and humility keeps us walking beside God instead of ahead of him. Today, choose one of the three and make it concrete. Pay someone fairly, show kindness to a person who let you down, or admit you were wrong about something small. Let faith show up in the everyday.

Prayer

God, keep me from empty religion. Teach me justice, mercy, and a humble walk with you.
