Staying Connected
““I am the true vine, and My Father is the keeper of the vineyard. He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit, and every branch that does bear fruit, He prunes to make it even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me. I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing.”
Jesus describes himself as the vine and us as the branches. A branch does not strain to produce fruit; it simply stays attached, and the life of the plant flows through it. That is a relief for anyone worn out by trying harder. The verb that repeats is remain, or abide, which suggests a settled, ongoing closeness rather than an occasional visit. The passage also says the gardener prunes, which is uncomfortable to read, yet pruning is aimed at more fruit, not at punishment. Apart from him, Jesus says, we can do nothing, and that is not an insult but a description of dependence. Today, choose a simple rhythm of staying connected: a short prayer at each meal, or a verse read at a set time. Start small and consistent, and notice whether what you do that day flows from connection or from strain.
Prayer
Jesus, true vine, keep me close. Let whatever good I do today flow from you.
