Better Together
“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. For if one falls down, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to help him up! Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; but how can one keep warm alone? And though one may be overpowered, two can resist. Moreover, a cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
The writer of Ecclesiastes has spent chapters looking at life under the sun and finding much of it empty. Then he pauses to note something that truly works: two are better than one. If one falls, the other helps them up. If they lie down together, they keep warm. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Modern life encourages independence, and we may wear self-reliance as a badge. Yet the wisdom of this passage is plain: we were made for company. The strongest people are not those who need nobody, but those who have chosen good companions. Today, reflect on who helps you up when you fall, and whether you have thanked them. Then reach out to one friend, and if you feel isolated, take a step to join a group or a church small group. Invite God into the third strand.
Prayer
God, thank you for the people who lift me. Weave me into good community.
