Clothed for the Day
“Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which is the bond of perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, for to this you were called as members of one body. And be thankful.”
Paul uses the image of getting dressed. Each morning we choose clothes, and he suggests we also choose qualities: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience. These are not personality traits reserved for naturally sweet people; they are garments God's chosen ones put on deliberately, one day at a time. He adds two demanding habits: bearing with one another and forgiving as the Lord forgave us. Over everything he asks us to wear love, which holds the rest together like a belt, and to let Christ's peace act as referee in our hearts. Peace is not just a mood; it is a decision-maker. Today, before you leave the house or open your first message, picture one quality from this list and ask God to help you wear it. When someone tests your patience, remember which garment you chose this morning.
Prayer
God, dress me today in kindness and patience. Let your peace decide what I say and do.
