God Looks at the Heart

“When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and said, “Surely here before the LORD is His anointed.” But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or height, for I have rejected him; the LORD does not see as man does. For man sees the outward appearance, but the LORD sees the heart.””

Samuel was sent to anoint a new king and assumed it would be the tall, impressive son who walked in first. God corrected him gently: people look at outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. The chosen one turned out to be the youngest, the one nobody thought to invite to the gathering, out in the field with the sheep. This does not mean talent and preparation do not matter; it means they are not what God checks first. We live in a world that rewards image, followers, and first impressions, and we can absorb those measures without noticing. Today, watch how quickly you judge people, and yourself, by surface details. When you catch it, pause and ask what might be true underneath. Then choose to encourage one person others tend to overlook, in a specific way, with a sincere word.

Prayer

Lord, you see what I cannot. Shape my heart, and free me from judging by appearances.
