The Gift of Stopping

“Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. And by the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on that day He rested from all His work. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on that day He rested from all the work of creation that He had accomplished.”

Before humanity had accomplished anything, God gave it a day of rest. Creation ends not with a task but with a pause, and God calls that pause holy. It is easy to treat rest as a reward for finishing everything, yet this passage places it at the very start of our story: we are loved before we produce. Rest is a way of saying that the world keeps turning without our hands on it. As summer approaches and calendars fill up, we tend to believe that stopping is laziness. Today, choose a real pause of at least twenty minutes. Silence your phone, sit somewhere quiet, and thank God for one thing you did not have to earn. Let the pause be an act of trust rather than an escape, and notice how your shoulders drop when you let him be God for a while.

Prayer

Father, teach me to stop without guilt and to rest in what you have already finished.
