A Very Present Help

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth is transformed and the mountains are toppled into the depths of the seas, though their waters roar and foam and the mountains quake in the surge.Selah”
Psalms 46:1-3 (BSB)Read the whole chapter →

This psalm imagines the worst: mountains shaking, seas roaring, the ground giving way. Yet its opening line is calm: God is our refuge and strength, a help that is always found in trouble. The word present matters. He is not a distant rescuer arriving late; he is already there when things shake. Notice that the psalmist does not deny the fear. The image of quaking mountains is honest about how frightening life can feel. Faith is not the absence of trembling but the decision to stand somewhere solid while things tremble. Today, name one area where the ground feels unstable, your health, your finances, a relationship. Write it down, and beside it write the words refuge and strength. Then take one practical step of care for that area, trusting that God is in it with you.

Prayer

God, you are my refuge when everything shakes. Hold me steady today.
